Cycle III
October 2011 - April 2012
The “Us and Them – Us as Them” cycle is about immigration, a burning issue throughout Europe. The cycle’s wide-ranging discussions will focus on both the Greek and international dimension of immigration.
The realities of the impact of immigration on the Greek economy will be discussed along with the myths. We will also be turning the spotlight on the new social inequalities that have set our globalized era’s great waves of immigration in motion, and on the extreme Right’s knee-jerk reaction to the phenomenon. At the same time, the cycle will explore the issue of social solidarity through the personal accounts of people who have offered immigrants their practical and moral support. There will also be a discussion dedicated to the degree to which immigrants are integrated into the Greek educational system.
Finally, we shall be attempting to shed light on the new wave of Greek immigration in reaction to the economic crisis, while well-known immigrants—some Greek, some not—will talk about their experiences of building a life in a new country.
