formed in 1986, the theatre company has stood out thanks to its commitment to tackling serious socio-political issues in depth, and to presenting them on stage in sincere and revelatory performances which explore every aspect of their theme, even the most unpleasant. Their complete lack of political correctness and hypocritical conventionality also mark them out as unique, as does their deep-seated awareness that the more sincerely we accept our mistakes, the greater our chances will be of making the world a better place. Dramatically, their performances are an explosive mix of ‘unprocessed’ dialogues, documentary-style exposition, intense movement and lyrical choreography. John
is based on interviews with 50 men; the company's choreographer, Lloyd Newson
, asked them to respond honestly to questions about love and sex.
John is an ordinary man and his story involves a struggle for survival, violence, crime and unexpected twists. It is an astounding, human and deeply moving tale. John is another DV8 production set to become a classic.
