Following on in the wake of her much-discussed solo, Hardcore Research on Dance, Georgia Vardarou returns with Phenomena, an award-winning production that has left its mark on the European festival circuit. A dancer and choreographer whose achievements belie her youth, Vardarou was recently honoured with an invitation to work alongside Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and her Rosas company.

Phenomena is an exploratory collaboration and study on personal identity in a minimal and abstract spatial and visual environment. How can the uniqueness of the individual make its mark in a social environment or an organized group structure? The three dancers in the production respond to the question with method and near-improvisatory experimentation: momentary movements spur in them a new interest in the static harmony of the scene; unexpected reactions bestow a special meaning on the narrativity of the space which the work invites us to share, visually. The choreographer stresses the importance of experience over the hegemony of logic. The minimalist stage is warmly lit in primary shades of yellow, blue and red. The initial silence melts into remixed works by Philip Glass.
