A concert in collaboration with Tinos World Music Festival
One day before the opening of the festival, there will be a pre-festival concert at the Upper Stage of Onassis Cultural Centre with the participation of Periklis Papapetropoulos (saz), Cihan Turkoglu (saz, vocals), Stratis Psaradellis (politiki lyra), Giorgis Manolakis Duo and Alexandros Papadimitrakis Quartet.
This year Tinos World Music Festival focuses on the lute, the string musical instrument that has dominated the wider part of the Mediterranean region since centuries. The lute, closely related to tanbur, lavta, saz and oud, is considered the milestone of a centuries-long musical tradition deeply rooted in the cultures of the Mediterranean and beyond.
Playing a leading or accompanying role the lute is an inextricable part of the identity of different musical genres that developed in those regions to the extent that sometimes it stands as a cultural symbol.
This year’s edition, will take place on the Holy Spirit three-day weekend on the Tinos Island (Friday 29th to Sunday 31st of May), and features lute soloists and virtuosi from Greece and Turkey that will collaborate on stage to present a variety of repertoire and different versions of the lute, highlighting the similarities as well as the uniqueness of each musical instrument and genre.

The festival is organized by:

Part A: Giorgos Manolakis duo
Giorgis Manolakis: lute
Pavlos Spyropoulos:doublebass

Having been practicing the lute since the age of 8 under the guidance of his father, Kostas Manolakis, who was one of the foremost lute players of his generation, Giorgis Manolakis has developed to be one of the most important Cretan lute virtuosi. Drawing from musical tradition he identifies its contemporary beat and follows its evolution. In his collaboration with Pavlos Spyropoulos they improvise having as a starting point Giorgis Manolakis’ two personal albums (“The sword” and “Ditto: Kafkos and Medusa”), and venturing to other musical forms and traditions.
Part B: Alexandros Papadimitrakis Quartet
Alexandros Papadimitrakis: oud
Nikos Paraoulakis: ney
Manousos Klapakis: percussion
Pavlos Spyropoulos: doublebass
Alexandros Papadimitrakis is a young virtuoso with a unique technical and aesthetic approach on the oud. His broad background extends from traditional Greek and Ottoman music to contemporary improvised and experimental music. In collaboration with three acclaimed musicians of the Greek world music scene, Nikos Paraoulakis on ney, Manousos Klapakis on percussion and Pavlos Spyropoulos on doublebass he forms a new ensemble which assimilates various sound colours of the Middle East. Their original compositions and their arrangements integrate different musical traditions from Asia Minor, the Black Sea, Turkish and Arabic classical music, resulting into a new modal sound with a minimalistic and improvisational spirit.

Part C: "Mouhabet"
Periklis Papapetropoulos: saz, lavta, voice
Cihan Turkoglu: saz, voice
Stratis Psaradellis: politiki lyra

Descended from Anatolia, a crossroad of different cultures, Cihan Turkoglu is trying to find balance and form his musical identity with the spirit of a globetrotter. His first meeting with the virtuoso Periklis Papapetropoulos for Ross Daly’s “Labyrinth” signified the beginning of their unique and fruitful collaboration that gave birth to the projects “Mouhabet”, which means “coming together”. Through this dynamic collaboration with Stratis Psaradellis on politiki lyra they will unfold their cultural heritages and seek for ways to interweave Greek with Turkish elements, the traditional with the contemporary.
