Kai and Gerda are inseparable. They play, share their hopes and dreams, and are nourished by their friendship. Their happiness is brought to an abrupt end, however, when the terrifying Snow Queen, who is allergic to love, uses her magic to separate them. When Kai follows the Queen to her castle in distant Lapland, Gerda decides to search for her beloved friend and sets off on a journey full of adventure, surprises and exciting encounters. Will she find Kai and persuade him to come home with her?
The musician, director and Associate Artistic Director of the Greek National Opera, Thodoris Abazis, has written an opera based on Hans Christian Andersen’s much-loved fairytale. His aim: to familiarize children with opera “so they will come to love the genre”, as he puts it. “The production flirts with the musical, too, but it was essentially written to acquaint a young audience with opera and its conventions.”
A tale of loyalty, love and growing up comes to life at the OCC in an original musical spectacle for young and old in the run-up to Christmas.
