Come Along. I Draw Musical Notes!
Music and visual art workshop for children with moderate mental disabilities and their parents.
OCT - NOV 2015 & MAR - APR 2016
Children 5-7 years old and 8-11 years old with mild mental disability and their parents.
What is the colour of love? If friendship were a melody, what kind of melody would it be? Using music and visual art as tools, children express their emotions and let their imagination “run wild”.
Through music and visual art, the Onassis Cultural Centre’s latest workshop gives the opportunity to children with moderate developmental difficulties and to their parents to experiment with sounds and colours.
In a safe environment, children develop their language, sensory, and fine motor skills, and improve their self-organization through group play, and through the guidance of a team with expertise in developmental disabilities.
Initially, children become familiar with several musical instruments, producing sounds and melodies. Rhythm is an important element of this workshop. Through a series of musicokinetic activities, parents get to know and introduce new kinds of play to their children’s everyday lives. The aim of this workshop is for the children to sense their own existence, express their emotions, play, and experience different kinds of music.
Music activities are interchanged with visual-art activities. What colour would you give to a rhythm? What is the shape of a melody? Children get to know colours and shapes, depicting concepts on paper, such as rhythm, volume, pitch, and melodic line. In this way, they improve upon their kinetic skills, sense of space and time, and their imagination.
Through participation of individual and team play activities, children learn to express themselves and work with other children; their parents find yet another way to work with them through expressing themselves visually.
creditsThe team consists of specialized practitioners. The workshop will be led by the musicologist and music therapist Christina Panagiotakou, and art therapist Eleni Palle.
