This exhibition is a sample collection of the work produced by a group of people over the past 3 years. The individuals in the group all have something in common - they are over 65 years old and they all love art!
Over the past 3 years, this group (consisting mostly of ladies but also including a few distinguished gentlemen) have worked with a variety of media in both 2D and 3D form, to create a small portfolio of work. This type of class, designed for people 65+, is the first of its kind in Greece, and has been a success.
Most of the participants in the class are people who have always been drawn to art, but never had an opportunity to immerse themselves in it, either because of practical concerns such as work and taking care of a family, or for social reasons - they were simply discouraged or forbidden from pursuing their artistic dreams when they were young. Now that they have the time, independence and freedom to do what they like, they come to class full of energy, enthusiasm, curiosity, and talent!
In these workshops we have learned together how to look at art analytically, and how to work with a variety of artistic media. They learn how to use art in order to communicate ideas, and also as a form of psychological therapy. Something else that makes the class fun is the social aspect - ideas are shared and friendships are formed.
"As an instructor, I also get a lot out of this experience. Besides the usual benefits of teaching, such as seeing my students develop their talent and becoming more confident, there are additional pleasures in working with a group of this age.
The individuals in the group are well read, cultured, and active, and through the conversations we have in class I absorb a lifetime of knowledge through their experience. I also have inspiration for when I am older - I now know that I can choose to be just like my students - constantly discovering, and youthful at any age!"
