One of the most emblematic and expressive voices of the Middle East as well as a skilled oud player, Kamilya Jubran brings along two fellow travellers and exquisite musicians: Sarah Murcia on the double bass and Werner Hasler on the trumpet and electronics. The unusual combination of instruments of this musical ensemble, and the chemistry between musicians creates an unprecedented experience.

Though Jubran has worked with both musicians in the past in every possible duet combination, this is the first time they all come together, opening up a creative dialogue between classical Arab music, Western contemporary classical music, European jazz, and electronica, among others. They are ‘driven’ by the verses of Palestinian poet Salman Masalha and Moroccan poet Hassan Najmi; both poets are deeply influenced by the tradition of classical Arabic poetry, while, at the same time, express their concerns for the situation of the contemporary Arab world.

In Arabic Wasl stands for blending, union, and combination. Jubran’s trio is integrally connected to these notions. Its mission is to unite Maghreb of the West with Mashriq of the East (that is, the Arab world of North Africa with that of the Middle East). It aims to bring forth an enlightened, contemporary image of the Arab world, which will then be connected to the European spirit. At the same time, Wasl’s music quite naturally bridges the makam of the East with the twelve-tone technique of the West. Through this encounter, a melancholic sound emerges that stimulates the spirit, creating a space for reflection and for unprecedented emotions.
