The Onassis Cultural Centre-Athens, in collaboration with the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki and museum educators/visual artists and musicians/composers, gave the opportunity to students of vocational schools in Athens and Thessaloniki to familiarise themselves with contemporary artworks and explore the close relations between the visual and auditory arts.
In Athens, students from the 2nd Vocational School of Sivitanidios Public Arts and Crafts and the 2nd Vocational High School of Nea Smyrni were introduced to the contemporary work of Nikos Podias Inside Out
and Nikos Papadopoulos Ocean Rock Garden
, while in Thessaloniki students from the 1st Vocational High School of Ampelokipoi and the 1st Vocational High School of Neapolis were inspired by the work of Mikhail Matyushin Musical/Visual Construction
(1918) and Alexander Rodchenko’s Expressive Rhythm
(1943). Both works form part of the Costaki Collection “Russian Avant-Garde”.
During the 4-month programme, the students became acquainted with the work of the artists and created their own musical compositions, working with DIY musical instruments and other available materials and surfaces, mobile phone recordings and use of open-source sound editing software.
The educational programme was realised as part of the European programme Interfaces, and is inspired by the educational programme “Creative Workshops” (Ateliers de la creation) available in France since 2010 under the auspices of IRCAM (an institute researching aspects of music and sound and avant-garde electroacoustic art music) and Centre Pompidou (National Museum of Modern Art) with the participation of numerous vocational high schools.
