New media and technologies workshop

Medea Electronique

2011, September 24-25 & October 8-9
10:30
The OCC joins forces with the participants in the Medea Electronique Koumaria Residency to stage a cycle of workshops and seminars addressing improvisation and contemporary media in the arts.
As part of its ongoing efforts to support and promote new artistic formations that create collectively and express themselves using new media of varying sorts, the Onassis Cultural Centre’s Educational Programmes Department will be collaborating with the Medea Electronique group this year in the presentation of its Koumaria residency at the Centre.

The 10-day Koumaria exploratory workshop / residency will be focusing on improvisation, and will serve as a springboard for artists involved with new media assembling in Sellasia near Sparti in the Peloponnese. Inspired by the locality’s nature, artists from around the world will take part in an improvisatory, multicultural dialogue which will give rise to a work to be produced and presented at the Onassis Cultural Centre.

The Onassis Cultural Centre will be joining forces with the participants in the Medea Electronique Koumaria Residency to stage a cycle of workshops and seminars addressing improvisation and contemporary media in the arts. Taking a thematic approach to knowledge, the workshops, seminars and residency will tackle the same theme: what is identity and how do we express it? The workshops and seminars will take place over the last weekend in September (24-25/9) and the second weekend in October (8-9/10).

Participants will get hands-on experience of cutting-edge technology in dance, electronic music, video art, VJing, photography and stop-motion animation as well as individual instruction from respected professionals. The workshops will culminate in the presentation of a collective work produced by the different groups at the Onassis Cultural Centre (Upper Stage). Entrance to the performance will be free.

At the workshops, participants:

- Will have the opportunity to meet/create/talk with professionals active in Greece and abroad;
- Will acquire practical and theoretical knowledge in their chosen new media field, with workshops focusing on stop-motion animation, VJing and photography and improvisation in dance and music;
- Will use new media and available technologies (e.g. new telephone technologies like iPhone and Android which are used by young people today) to create multimedia works.
- Will work in groups towards the presentation of a collective multimedia project at the Onassis Cultural Centre (Upper Stage).
