The Camerata are opening their new season at the OCC with a Greek first, playing all of Bach’s legendary Brandenburg Concertos in a single evening on period instruments similar to those the composer actually wrote for. The six “Concerts à plusieurs instruments”, as Bach describes them, were completed in 1721, and are widely regarded as among the finest compositions of the Baroque era. Bach’s masterful musical ideas are played on unique combinations of instruments featuring the baroque oboe, recorder and baroque horn, voilas da gamba, harpsichord (its first solo appearance in a concerto), theorbo and stringed instruments with gut strings. The solo parts are extremely demanding on the performer and push the instruments to their limits. Bach balances the sound of the six concertos wonderfully: three are orchestral in character, while the rest have a chamber music ambience.
