How captivating can a blood-soaked drama from 1633 dealing with taboo subject matter—the incestuous love of a brother and a sister—be? This contemporary, electrifying and utterly addictive production from Cheek by Jowl, the award-winning theatre company famed from its bold, fresh takes on classic works, reveals John Ford’s ‘Τis Pity She's a Whore in all its grim magnificence. Like a hellish version of Romeo and Juliet, this ‘anatomy’ of Annabella and Giovanni’s forbidden love—and the corrupt society that drives them to their death—takes place around a bed in a teenage bedchamber. The disco, pop and rock music gets the adrenalin flowing, while the explosive combination of black humour and infernal voices catapults us into a hallucinogenic world reminiscent of Pulp Fiction.
