The Onassis Cultural Centre-Athens participates in ART-ATHINA 2011, the biggest annual art fair in Greece, which takes place on 12-15 May at the Faliro Pavillion (TaeKwonDo), with the participation of 58 galleries and 40 institutions.
The Onassis Cultural Centre-Athens is being represented as an exhibitor (booth L2) and at the Parallel Programme (room B) with the video-projection The Visual Dialogues at ART-ATHINA 2011, curated by art historian and Head of the Centre's Visual Arts Department, Marilena V. Karra. The screening consists of a selection of works, originally shown during Visual Dialogues (November 2010 - January 2011), the Centre’s first visual arts production and a parallel event to the international conference, Athens Dialogues.
Fourteen Greek visual artists were asked to use contemporary media to translate into images their views on the thematic sections of the conference, encompassing issues such as identity, history, democracy, science, ethics and quality of life. The new works were installed in public places around Athens in order to facilitate unexpected encounters with passers-by.
During ART-ATHINA 2011, only 9 out of 14 works are shown, those originally created in video format and those which formed no part of in-situ installations at specific indoors or outdoors spaces. In addition, to recreate the experience of the original event, a documentary on Visual Dialogues, including all 14 works, is on view.
In an attempt to stimulate fresh dialogue among the artworks and between the works and the visitors, the venture takes the highly interesting step of showing these works again in a completely different context, in an exhibition space as opposed to the public spaces where they were initially shown and in front of an audience that has chosen to visit an art-fair and to view this parallel artistic event.
Participating artists: Christos Apostolakis, Katerina Apostolidou, Makis Faros, Eleni Kamma, Anna Lascari, Despina Meimaroglou, Angelo Plessas, Yannis Scourletis, Vassiliea Stylianidou.
