Camerata on Period Instruments

Musical Encounters 2011-2012

November 2011 - May 2012
In its second season at the Onassis Cultural Centre, the Camerata’s performances continue to place centre stage the very latest musicological research and international trends in the sphere of historically informed practices and period instrument performance. Having left its mark on the international discography, the orchestra takes another step forward, bringing the creativity of the present face to face with that of the ‘classical’ repertoire which, having withstood the test of time, lives on forever in music lovers’ hearts. Thus, it is with the 18th-century sound palette and the magical timbres of baroque instruments at their disposal that Pericles Koukos engages with Lully, Giorgos Koumentakis with Rameau and Dimitris Papadimitriou with Glück. Similarly, Vivaldi comes face to face with one of our greatest contemporary composers, John Corigliano, with whom he has the violin and audience adulation in common, while the choreographer Ioanna Portolou and the Griffon dance company imbue Beethoven’s wonderful ballet, Prometheus, with unexpected dimensions. The Camerata will also be redefining the same composer’s Seventh Symphony by taking it back to the roots of its sound, and greeting Christmas 2011 with one of the most magnificent works in the history of music: Handel’s Messiah oratorio, which conveys the Christmas message of joy and optimism in such singular fashion.
Myron Michailides engages with the four great classical composers who were working in Vienna around the turn of the 19th century, bringing Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto to life in the unmistakable tones of a Viennese fortepiano from 1790, and revisiting the music of Haydn, Mozart and Schubert through the sounds of this legendary era. He will be joined in these musical encounters by a number of musicians whose artistry has given them the courage to take their music a step further: the conductor George Petrou (winner of the Echo Klassik award), the mixed choir of the Municipality of Athens, the celebrated counter-tenor Max Emanuel Cencic, Giorgos Demertzis, Thanasis Apostolopoulos, Nikos Spanos, Irini Karagianni, Jason Darnell, Petros Magoulas and all the other friends who, by making the Camerata’s first season at the Onassis Cultural Centre so special, ensured there would be many more. In its new cycle of “Musical Encounters”, the Camerata on period instruments has a number of firsts in store, along with surprises, emotions and unforgettable musical experiences.
